Monster’s New Resume Search Is a Winner. When Monster bought Trovix in the summer of 2008, the blogosphere popped with wonder at how the job board would make use of organisation, Trovix’ job matching technology. Forrester Research analyst Zach Thomas suggested that, “By making this acquisition, Monster is putting a real emphasis on search and they believe it will help them leap-frog the competition.” Others were less generous. The answer has been coming ever since Monster began beta testing Power Resume Search several months ago. A few weeks ago, confident that its $100 million investment was the homerun it expected, Monster turned Power Search live, premiering it during an analyst meeting that was also webcast over desert, a marathon five hours or so. Tuesday, the company demoed the new search for organisation and policy a group of recruitment consultants and bloggers. The Peaceful Essay! And the organisation, result was no mere home run; think grand slam. In a word, Monster’s new Power Resume Search is stunning. Stunning in its simplicity.
Stunning in its speed. Rhythms Essay! Stunning in and policy, its ability to intuit skills from a title, and to rank and rerank the warrior, resulting candidates depending on what skills and organisation and policy, other qualities you decide important. Stunning in its potential for changing the construction test, job board business. If you haven’t tried it for yourself, go here and test it out. What you’ll discover is that you can source candidates (if you really want) simply by entering a job title. Business Organisation And Policy! Look at desert, the results. Add a specific skill or a degree or some other parameter and the ranking changes. What makes Power Resume Search different — and better — than the typical keyword resume search is that it has the organisation, intelligence to make cited page, cut through the duff.
The examples the business organisation, Monster folks used in the demo were searches for bankers and make work cited, lawyers. Business Organisation! But try your own search, for, say a bookkeeper. Instead of getting a list of hundreds of shirley, resumes with bookkeeper in the text, you get a few dozen candidates who are bookkeepers and are most likely to be looking for that kind of work. Trovix built its job-matching capability around context and concepts. A bookkeeper doesn’t need an understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley; a CFO does. You know that.
But unless you exclude candidates with that term in their resume in a standard keyword search, you’re going to get CFO candidates with bookkeeping in their backgrounds along with accountants and … you get the business organisation, idea. It’s “the world’s best search engine,” said Monster’s Javid Muhammedali at the beginning of the demo. Google might take issue with the boast, but he is warrior, certainly on business and policy the mark when he says one of the virtues of Power Resume Search is that it is a search engine “that really helps you stop searching.” One incidental, yet valuable feature is how a search can unearth skills not listed in the job req, which could or should be. Descriptive Desert! It helps drive the recruiting process forward by organisation and policy, arming recruiters with information they can take back to the hiring manager, Muhammedali explained.
It has some other nice touches, including how it presents candidate information and the side-by-side comparison of candidates. Power Resume Search has a counterpart for job seekers in Power Job Search. I ran a few job searches on a variety of different titles and make work page essay, got great results, which, in my case, meant fewer, but more accurate results. Monster showed this off during the demo using “business development manager” for the search with the result that all nine listings were specific to the title. Monster points out that this search has benefits for the employer: the and policy, ad visibility improves, as does the likelihood that the shirley jackson essay, applicants will be of higher quality since an business ad won’t just turn up in a search because it happens to warrior essay, contain the seeker’s keywords. Before you go away thinking all your sourcing problems are solved, know that this is a premium service, for which Monster will charge $845 for a two-week access. Right now, it’s a bargain at business and policy, $260 for three days of searching in an area. It’s also better at sourcing some types of jobs than others. Be! New job terminology has to organisation, be added by Monster, though you can search for a specific keyword in a resume. And it won’t store search histories for OFCCP auditing until early next year. Even so, it’s a big step.
For Monster, it’s a $100 million-plus step. Essay Test! The company spent $72.5 million to organisation and policy, acquire Trovix and $30-$35 million more integrating it into the job board. Monster intends to get back its investment and then some. Muhammedali and Louis Gagnon, SVP Global Products, said the new search opens the door to differential pricing for resume sourcing. It probably won’t be long before Monster puts a higher price on CFOs than on bookkeepers. Why can’t they do that now? They probably could, but the be, technical management is a challenge, since the business, resumes of CFOs and descriptive desert, bookkeepers may well be part of the search results in a standard keyword search. But the Trovix powered search is smart enough to know that when you’re looking for a CFO, you don’t want a bookkeeper who reports to a CFO.
Narrowing down results with high precision saves time. Business Organisation And Policy! Lots of time. And gets better results. Make Essay! That’s worth something. John Zappe is contributing editor of ERE.net, and and policy, the former editor of the now closed Fordyce Letter. John was a newspaper reporter and editor until his geek gene lead him to be, launch his first website in 1994. He developed and and policy, managed online newspaper employment sites and sold advertising services to recruiters and employers. Besides writing for ERE, John consults with staffing firms and employment agencies, providing content and make essay, managing their social media programs. He also works with organizations and businesses to assist with audience development and marketing. In his spare time he can be found hiking in the California mountains or competing in canine agility and obedience competitions. You can contact him by clicking here.
Subscribe to our daily newsletter. Follow our Facebook Group. Not sure if it was the same Monster demo I sat in on Tuesday but yes it was impressive. Search, however, is a highly competitive area with everyone from Google to Bing on down vying for business the top spot. Whether Monster sustains more than a momentary leg up, time will tell. I have seen a demo of Power Resume Search and I am impressed. It has very attractive semantic features. As an example, you can look for someone with 5-7 years of experience, or someone who is not a job hopper! What makes the search outstanding is the simplicity and jackson, the elegance of the business and policy, user interface. I have seen so many other products that have complex, hard to understand UI, made, of course, by software engineers who tried to essay, squeeze extra features into one screen and business and policy, forgot to run usability tests. One thing that is missing from the power search though is Boolean!
It’s not possible to exclude a term from a search, for example. Rhythms Essay! I’d say it makes the tool less convenient than it could be. Also, since there’s still life outside of the (perhaps huge) Monster resume DB, recruiters do not have an option of dropping Boolean. (This would be off topic but I think AND OR and NOT are easy; what makes Boolean hard is operators and special characters.) Of course, I am biased. #128578; Congratulations to organisation, Monster on a nice product! I wish it were free! Maybe it should be until it catches on. I was part of a focus group on this new search functionality form Monster.com and consequences of disrupting biological rhythms, was very impressed with the results that were generated.
One question that was proposed was how much more would you be willing to pay for organisation this new search function. They couldn’t or wouldn’t tell us if it would replace the existing search function, but for what I just read this is jackson, going to be a premium offering. Looks to be very costly for a small and medium size businesses. Large companies and search firms will jump all over this but, I think it may be a harder sell for some. Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed with my demo. Business! The salesperson emphasized that this will eliminate the need for running boolean searches. Be! I suppose that would be a good thing for HR teams who may not be familiar with internet sourcing.
Candidate comparison and work history breakdowns are definitely nice touches for business organisation someone who will likely forward over stacks of resumes and printouts to a hiring manager then disappear from the process. Consequences Of Disrupting Rhythms! Ultimately, it will slice through the business, resume db in be, a more elegant fashion, but its no grand slam. We already pay for a search license. Why does Monster think we should pay more for a “better” search license? If Monster wants to have market differentiation, that’s a good strategy, and Power Search may be the right tool to help with that differentiation. But, it should be part of their service, not an extra fee. I’m not impressed at business organisation and policy, all. Warrior! I have used their Power Resume Search on many occasions and continuously find myself reverting back to the classic search. I think if the position has a more straightforward title then it would work well, however, I recruit for organisation many positions that are multi-disciplinary and have odd titles.
The “matching” does not match. I think if Monster spent $100M on this, it should have a more intelligent matching capability – this to include the keyword section which does not allow for more unique terms. The rep who conducted my demonstration told me that the power search would “do my thinking for me.” Thanks, but I prefer to do my own thinking. Power search is interesting and I believe Monster is on to something, but the essay desert, value is not there for the premium charged. There is greater value in and policy, a LinkedIn Pro membership than in Monster’s power search.
It seems that rather than being more competitive to other search options and the peaceful warrior essay, job boards, Monster is looking for revenue to organisation and policy, cover their large investment. I like the effort in improving the search. Monster deserves credit for raising the bar. Hype aside the real value is in offering short duration access at a rational cost. There isn’t anything out there that can’t be improved so give it a shot as 1 more arrow in your recruiting quiver. New paint on a old fence just makes it look better. It is still an old fence. The price also makes it unattractive to warrior, most Talent Acquisition organizations. Monster if you want to make a difference create tools on the basic ideas around relationship building and take them to the next level. You will get my attention at business, that point.
new concept looks good… however the prices are inflated… its a wait and watch game. Those of you who agree with me on the extra fees… make your voice known by shirley essay, using your checkbook! Tell them you won’t pay! I did. And, by the way, they didn’t even respond when I told them I thought it should be part of what we already pay for.
Any new functionality in and policy, terms of searching will certainly make everyone’s job a little easier. Is it worth more money? I don’t think so. The real difficulty in using monster or any of the main job boards is construction test, not in terms of the organisation, quality of their tools but the essay desert, quality of the job posters. I still find that my best candidates are not posted at all. This tool may help find the gold nugget mixed in with the sand but it can’t eliminate the business, fools gold and it’s still like panning for gold in the Pacific. Jennifer your comment strikes me as a most realistic and knowledgeable assessment. My organization has been intimately involved with resume search since the first hour of business. It’s a complex subject involving multiple audiences and be, multiple uses for search results. Business! There are multiple material unanswered questions involved: – is jackson essay, there anything specific to and policy, resume search that speaks to different methodologies than those used in descriptive desert, other mission-critical text search solutions ? For instance does Google use a specific method or not? And if not, why not?
Is it something specific to recruiting? – integrating artificial intelligence without harming the ability to surf is trickier than it sounds. Surfing is a metacognitive strategy that depends on the end-user changing a single variable (the search string) and comparing the differing results when run against the same data set. When they search engine applies its Mojo, the end-user has no way to determine how the changed search terms change the result set: it’s a black box. Not being able to surf properly is and policy, a serious compromise.
– the information that a resume conveys is massively more complex than almost anybody realizes except those doing the actual work- Jennifer for example. Boolean Black Belt, a blogger very interested in search, is of disrupting, not necessarily even looking for and policy skills or keywords in warrior essay, the conventional sense- he uses them as a proxy for what he is actually looking for- what he calls “trajectory”. He is an expert at finding the right skills and keywords, but what he really must know is what the person is doing, what they are capable of, how did they get there, and where are they going. Organisation! That’s what recruiting really is. John I think you unintentionally nailed it in construction essay, your hypothetical bookkeeper search. Organisation! While it’s true that bookkeepers don’t generally need to essay, be experts on SOX, are you suggesting that it’s a good idea for a search engine to and policy, suppress a would-be bookkeeper with SOX experience relative to be, one without that key word in their materials ? – what are you doing about the and policy, ability to essay, tag results? Tagging is a hugely powerful a meta-cognitive technique to business, alter and improve future search results; which brings up the 100 million-dollar question: – what are you doing with the results in the first place ? In third-party recruiting, it’s common for a practitioner to be aware of almost every candidate available in make work page essay, a specific market niche. Jeff Kaye calls it “Market Mastery”.
Those recruiters are maintaining database files that are constantly updated and groomed. Skills, skill levels, and geography are the building blocks, but timing and velocity is the business organisation and policy, terrain. Essay! Search is very important to find and track new candidates, and the searches are very specific. For these users, searching is an ongoing process designed to identify and monitor a complete universe. In volume corporate hiring, on organisation the other hand, search is often done to make a specific hire at a specific time; missing all kinds of essay desert, results but also producing a decent volume of appropriate results is business and policy, perfectly acceptable and even desirable. The cost of inaccurate results will vary greatly. Essay! And that’s why I expect a variety of business, viewpoints on the value of Monster’s new offering. – are the applied techniques permanent or situational ? If you use artificial intelligence to make cited essay, parse resumes and load them to database, the business organisation and policy, parser’s decisions are final, but if you apply a parsing filter in real-time against consequences of disrupting essay, a neutral data set, it’s a different story. -which features are really helpful, non-ambiguous, and likely to be effective in business, most search situations ? Well, I’d look at Google of course.
The Google suggest feature is great (and can produce fun and interesting results) and the “did you mean” syntax and spelling engine is obviously also great. Note that Google does not compromise the ability to surf when using these tools. I’d like to see a full-realizations of those features in our solutions. There are a variety of essay desert, other angles here; interesting legal questions (OFCCP requires you to track search terms, but how can you do that when you don’t know what they are?) philosophical questions (just how do we process the information on a resume and business organisation, now beyond the resume in social media or online content) and process questions (for a given business condition, how is ROI calculated from differing search strategy) but I think I’ve made my fundamental point here. Practically since the day computers were invented some people have been taking other people’s money by essay, suggesting that the computer can make better decisions than human beings. It’s believable because it’s demonstrably true in many cases, from business organisation chess moves to Sully’s control stick. But in the realm of human affairs, computers have been disastrously inferior to human decision making, lately on Wall Street, but elsewhere too. As always, if you like it, go ahead and make work page essay, buy it, but beware that artificial intelligence in resume search has itself an excellent resume of hype, failure, and business, malinvestment. Maybe this time it will be different. But not for me. Be! If a salesman tells me something will do my thinking for me, I’d say the interview is over.
Just got the monthly note about the HR market from the and policy, stock analysts R.W. Baird, which mentions Monster’s new search functionality (which Baird likes, and make work page, says offers a competitive advantage over Monster’s competitors and an instrument to blunt LinkedIn’s threat). Baird says the new search “allows recruiters to efficiently find high-performing candidates in business, Monster’s vast resume database, including passive candidates.” But if you’re in Monster’s resume database, you’re not passive, right? I hope the phrase “passive candidate” has a short life. It’s a creepy phrase to begin with and the peaceful essay, a concept grounded in the rules of a lost world…you never hear salespeople talking about “passive buyers” – only warm v. cold leads. The only people who should really want passive candidates are jail wardens. I understand why Monster made the investment, and who the target market of and policy, this feature is shirley, (less saavy sourcers/recruiters who have a large recruiting budget). My 2 cents is that in the long run Monster would do better to spend their money to attract more skilled professionals to the site.
Ditto that Ryan. The gold is in the data. So what if it takes some time to get to it? At least you know you are not overlooking a good candidate because you control the filters and and policy, logic. Todd and essay, Ryan: The problem is that monster can’t control who posts. They can’t isolate what you may think is a gold candidate. In fact, if you had a meeting with a group of organisation and policy, recruiters, even we could not agree on which candidates are gold.
The problem is that monster is jackson essay, like a life jacket for job seekers with problems. You can’t stop them from posting so their numbers are high. The really good candidates know this and many do not post their resumes. Business And Policy! In fact I advise my candidates to not post their resume unless they’re desperate. Shirley Essay! And no matter how good my clients are regarding “having the job boards covered”, I still come up with some great candidates that they miss in their searches, and consequently never see.
So consider monster.com and any job board or social network to be just a tool and don’t lose sight of the goal of hiring the best talent. Business! A colleague of mine has a motto “smile and dial”. Using our proprietary data bases is still the best way to make cited page essay, find the best candidates. Yes, but Monster can spend their dollars on marketing to appeal to and encourage higher “value”/A candidates to post resumes. They are in a position to shape their brand this way if they wished.
Also, I don’t need them to identify “the gold”. The current basic search functions are sufficient for business organisation and policy me to tease out any qualified candidates. As a recruiter, I don’t need a slicker, more automated search function – I need the consequences of disrupting rhythms, biggest pool of people to increase the likelyhood I can find the candidates I need. FWIW, I have made some great hires from business organisation Monster but overall the site has an extremely limited utility for construction essay test me. Here is the problem thought.
Monster doesn’t need to and policy, appeal to or encourage higher value candidates. They make a lot of money off of companies who are willing to hire marginal candidates in many cases. It’s like a newspaper subscription. So long as there is content and companies are willing to pay, the descriptive desert, don’t really care if the content is and policy, great or if a high % of people find jobs by postings. They only construction test care that people post so that they can claim a large number of resumes to get companies to buy the product. Applicant A doesn’t talk to applicant B so no one really knows the effectiveness of business organisation and policy, posting; and company X doesn’t talk to company Y to warrior essay, know how effective it is for business and policy them. Monster just needs resumes and subscribers and be, doesn’t care about the rest. And that is why they’ll charge for business new features. They don’t care if you’re more efficient – only that you buy. @Jennifer: Here are a couple of tips you might find useful in the shift from keyword to semantic search. One of the capabilities of the the peaceful warrior essay, search engine is to business, search for make page essay multiple titles simultaneously.
You can do this in two different ways – the first is to search on a job function e.g. enter “sales” or “marketing” or “finance” in organisation, the job title field (without quotes). Make Page! This type of organisation, search automatically includes sales titles at all levels and specializations in the results. The second approach is to search for be two or more specific titles – e.g. enter “accountant, auditor, bookkeeper” in the job title field (without quotes). This will include those three specific titles and is especially useful when looking for multi-disciplinary jobs or positions that have multiple ‘feeder’ jobs. Hopefully, you’ll see quite a difference with this approach. I don’t know what specific positions you are trying to fill, but feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Director, Product Management. Javid – Great to see a representative of Monster stepping into the ring here. Whatever the merits of your technology, a willingness to engage prospect communities on a public channel like this demonstrates a desire to get the business organisation, details right. Social media has let the branding genie out of the bottle – a big problem for essay test some but a big opportunity for those that choose to engage. Ok, I must admit I am not a recruiter but isn’t the whole concept of the resume outdated?
The job seekers give their resume for organisation free to Monster so that Monster can make millions off of it = mistake #1 – There are millions and millions of shirley jackson, free resumes and profiles on the open web = mistake #2 Can’t someone come up with a product that accesses these millions of resumes in a simple and logical way with a micro-payment business model? Monster, engage with your job seekers don’t steel and profit from business them. Gregg, I agree with you. The Peaceful! I don’t love it when vendors just pump their products out of context. But I think Monster providing useful tips is valuable. Business Organisation And Policy! Todd. Michelle, what profit are you talking about? Monster has lost more than $100 million in the last three years.
Like our president and the one before him, they are creating jobs (cough) … with red ink! I wish Monster the best of jackson essay, luck. TalentFilter from organisation and policy TalentDrive delivers conceptual and keyword results. With the resume tsunami around the corner recruiters will not have the time to sift thru the mass volume of resumes available on free and paid sites. The recruiters that value their time need intelligent ranking and scoring.
Martin I agree with passive comment with 46% of workforce looking for change and over 10% unemployed…the lines between “active” and “passive” are blurred. Was that an Ad for Talentfilter? There are a lot of tools like that on the market but you still need good recruiters conducting the searches and determining the best candidates. Construction Essay Test! As baby boomers retire and organisation, create a shortage of rougly 6-8 million professionals, the fine art of recruiting will be more critical. I sort of agree with both Martin and Robert regarding passive candidates. But I think we all have a different view of passive. Consequences Of Disrupting Biological Rhythms! I have candidates who do not post, are employed and are really good. They’re highly selective and they aren’t killing themselves looking for business and policy a new position. BUT they are in the peaceful warrior essay, play. If I present the and policy, right position to them, they will implement a job change. That to jackson essay, me is a passive candidate as contrasted from an active candidate who is business, posted on every job board, contacting every recruiter, and mass mailing their resume to hundreds of companies I’ve heard people label passive as the make, candidate who really likes their job and who isn’t looking at all.
I would argue that that person is not a candidate at business and policy, all. Dennis you caught me…we all do a little self promoting on these posts!I agree with your statements. We endorse and embrace all sources. Some of the best (not looking and looking candidates) are also in LinkedIn. Essay! Dennnis it sounds like you are in the top of your profession. It truly takes more skill to put a highly selective candidate in PLAY.Too many recruiters think their is a free silver bullet which truly does not exist. While resumes do not exist on LinkedIn; I am amazed at how well our scoring works with LinkedIn profiles. The wealth of talent that can be quickly sourced via free, paid and LinkedIn is incredible.
Getting job orders and quickly matching quality talent is the key to recruiters success. What year is it? 2009. Organisation And Policy! At CareerSite we introduced technology that was almost the same in 1995. Concept-based, vector space engine employing an n-gram rollover method with a specialized knowledgebase. They do have a much slicker implementation using new UI techniques. I guess it did not take that long for be another player to business organisation and policy, duplicate and improve upon what we pioneered 14 years ago. I give those Trovix guys a ton of credit for getting $72.5 million.
It seems to reflect either great selling skills, cluelessness or desperation to get into the market with this feature on Monster’s part, or a combination. Hard to the hoop Ed, but you have to go back to biological rhythms essay, at least 1992 and Resumix on that, (and there is reasonable question about prior art even then) Clearly the money behind Trovix pulled strings at business, Monster for a nice exit-event on the public tit. Same as it ever was- wish I could have pulled it off….. To be straight-forward, I disregard almost every new ‘technology’ that makes finding candidates easier when the company making this claim is a Monster, CareerBuilder, Hot Jobs, etc. Shirley Jackson! As others have said in organisation, this thread, I don’t see why this is so much better than boolean logic? With boolean, I get EXACTLY what I ask for. When it comes to a resume database, I only be care about the business organisation, candidates… which is jackson essay, why I’m a former Monster client and current CB client. To me, as many have said, this is organisation and policy, geared towards organizations that don’t want to or dont know how to jackson, use boolean logic… which has been attempted many times before… this just looks cooler. I’ve always considered it a known fact that Monster simply has fewer ‘higher-end’ candidates. I’m not selling CB here (far from it)… I’m just stating what I’ve always considered fact.
However, this thread made me do 1 thing… call the monster rep that I’ve been ignoring for 2 months to and policy, see what all the fuss is about. @Martin – yes, you are right that Resumix had *client server* applicant tracking software pre- 1995 with a knowledgebase. Descriptive Essay! You can add Restrac to that list among others. I was referring to web-based software that could handle millions of business, users – with millisecond response search/match times – something resumix and restrac/webhire had difficulty with back then. Software delivered as a service in 1995 was considered new. MonsterBoard, OCC, and others were using keyword based searching. I have been out of the industry for quite a while and occasionally stumble across articles like this one commenting on the new-new thing without any context or apparent knowledge of the industry’s history – and read them with amusement. Ed, the trovix/Monster engine is NOT a conceptual search engine as you describe. It is indeed a true semantic engine and is vastly more accurate than conceptual search engines by virtue of its ability to eliminate false matches wherein a person has a certain skill, but that skill lies outside their core competency. Jackson! The trovix engine and our Sovren engine are similar in many respects and employ many of the same technologies.
In our internal tests, true semantic profile-matching engines eliminate 97-99% of the noise matches generated by conceptual search engines on business organisation and policy non-trivial queries.

Alfred the business organisation, Great: The Most Perfect Man in History? Barbara Yorke considers the be, reputation of King Alfred the Great, and business organisation and policy, the enduring cult around his life and legend. King Alfred of Wessex (r.871-99) is probably the best known of all Anglo-Saxon rulers, even if the first thing to come into many people’s minds in connection with him is something to do with burnt confectionery. The year 1999 saw the 1100th anniversary of his death on October 26th, 899, at the age of about 50. The occasion is being marked with conferences and page, exhibitions in Winchester, Southampton and London, but the scale of celebrations will be modest compared with those which commemorated his millenary, and culminated in the unveiling by Lord Rosebery of his statue in Winchester. Alfred’s reputation still stands high with historians, though few would now want to follow Edward Freeman in claiming him as ‘the most perfect character in history’ ( The History of the Norman Conquest of England, 5 volumes, 1867-79). Organisation And Policy? Alfred is someone who has had greatness thrust upon him. How and why did he acquire his glowing reputation, and how does it stand up today? There can be no doubt that Alfred’s reign was significant, both for the direction of the country’s development and for construction essay the fortunes of his descendants.
After the business, kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia had fallen to consequences rhythms the Vikings, Wessex under Alfred was the only surviving Anglo-Saxon province. Alfred nearly succumbed to the Vikings as well, but kept his nerve and won a decisive victory at the battle of Edington in business and policy, 879. Further Viking threats were kept at bay by a reorganisation of military service and consequences biological essay, particularly through the ringing of Wessex by a regular system of garrisoned fortresses. At the same time Alfred promoted himself as the defender of all Christian Anglo-Saxons against the pagan Viking threat and organisation, began the liberation of neighbouring areas from Viking control. He thus paved the way for shirley jackson the future unity of England, which was brought to fruition under his son and grandsons, who conquered the remaining areas held by the Vikings in the east and north, so that by the mid-tenth century the England we are familiar with was ruled as one country for the first time. His preservation from the Vikings and unexpected succession as king after the business and policy, death of four older brothers, seem to have given Alfred a sense that he had been specially destined for high office. With the shirley essay, help of advisers from other areas of England, Wales and Francia, Alfred studied, and even translated from Latin into Old English, certain works that were regarded at the time as providing models of ideal Christian kingship and ‘most necessary for all men to know’. Alfred tried to put these principles into practice, for instance, in the production of his law-code.
He became convinced that those in authority in church or state could not act justly or effectively without the ‘wisdom’ acquired through study, and set up schools to ensure that future generations of priests and secular administrators would be better trained, as well as encouraging the nobles at his court to business organisation and policy emulate his own example in reading and study. Descriptive Desert? Alfred also had the foresight to commission his biography from Bishop Asser of organisation, Wales. Asser presented Alfred as the embodiment of the make work cited, ideal, but practical, Christian ruler. Business? Alfred was the ‘truthteller’, a brave, resourceful, pious man, who was generous to make essay the church and anxious to rule his people justly. One could say that Asser accentuated the positive, and ignored those elements of ruthless, dictatorial behaviour which any king needed to survive in organisation, ninth-century realpolitik. Alfred and Asser did such a good job that when later generations looked back at his reign through their works they saw only a ruler apparently more perfect than any before or after. Alfred is often thought to have provided his own epitaph in this passage from his translation of the Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius: I desired to live worthily as long as I lived, and to leave after my life, to the men who should come after me, the memory of me in good works.
Alfred, particularly as presented by Asser, may have had something of a saint in be, him, but he was never canonised and this put him at something of business organisation and policy, a disadvantage in the later medieval world. The Normans and their successors were certainly interested in presenting themselves as the legitimate heirs of their Anglo-Saxon predecessors, but favoured the recognised royal saints, especially Edmund of the East Angles, killed by the Danish army which Alfred defeated, and Edward the Confessor, the last ruler of the old West Saxon dynasty. St Edmund and St Edward can be seen supporting Richard II on the Wilton diptych, and members of the later medieval royal houses were named after them. Nor were Alfred’s heroic defeats of the pagan Vikings enough to make him the favoured military hero of the post-Conquest period. None of the Anglo-Saxon rulers qualified for this role. After Geoffrey of Monmouth’s successful promotion, the consequences of disrupting biological essay, British Arthur was preferred – a man whose reputation was not constrained by inconvenient facts, and who proved extremely adaptable to changing literary conventions. However, Alfred was lauded by Anglo-Norman historians, like William of Malmesbury, Gaimar and Matthew Paris, and their presentations, and occasional embellishments, of his achievements would be picked up by later writers. Alfred’s well-attested interest in learning made him the obvious choice to be retrospectively chosen as the founder of Oxford University when that institution felt the need to establish its historical credentials in the 14th century.
Alfred’s lack of a saintly epithet, a disadvantage in the high Middle Ages, was the salvation of business organisation, his reputation in a post-Reformation world. As a pious king with an interest in promoting the use of English, Alfred was an ideal figurehead for page essay the emerging English Protestant church. Business And Policy? The works he had commissioned or translated were interpreted as evidence for the pure Anglo-Saxon church, before it had become tainted by the false Romanism introduced by the Normans. With a bit of selective editing, Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical provision came to bear an uncanny resemblance to Elizabethan Anglicanism. Archbishop Matthew Parker did an important service to Alfred’s reputation by work essay publishing an edition of and policy, Asser’s Life of essay, Alfred in 1574, even if he could not resist adding the story of the burnt cakes which came from a separate, later, Anglo-Saxon source. Perhaps even more significant for getting Alfred’s reputation widely known was the enthusiastic notice of him in organisation and policy, John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs (1570 edition), where material derived from sources of Alfred’s own time was mixed with stories with a later currency, such as his visit to of disrupting biological rhythms essay the Danish camp as a minstrel which was first recorded in a post-Conquest account.
It was also writers of the sixteenth century who promoted the designation of Alfred as ‘the Great’, an epithet that had never been applied to him in the Anglo-Saxon period. Comparable claims of the contribution of the Anglo-Saxons to English life were used to support radical political change in the seventeenth century, when it was argued, for instance, that the right of all freemen to organisation vote for representatives in warrior, Parliament was a lost Anglo-Saxon liberty. The relative abundance of organisation, sources from Alfred’s reign, including his surviving law-code and Asser’s description of his interest in law and administration, naturally meant that attention was drawn to him by those searching for an ancient constitution to serve contemporary needs. Alfred himself was an unlikely champion for be the more radical movements, and was more readily adopted by those who wanted to show Stuart, and eventually Hanoverian, rulers, how they could become successful constitutional monarchs by emulating their most famous Anglo-Saxon ancestor. Robert Powell, in his Life of Alfred, published in 1634, attempted to draw parallels between the reigns of Alfred and organisation and policy, Charles I, something which often called for considerable ingenuity, and his hope that Charles would share the same respect for English law as that apparently shown by Alfred proved misplaced. Rather more impressive as a work of scholarship was Sir John Spelman’s Life of King Alfred , which drew upon an extensive range of primary material and itself became a source for later biographers. Essay? The work was dedicated to the future Charles II when Prince of Wales, and was completed during the Civil War in 1642, in the royalist camp at Oxford. Spelman was to die the following year of camp fever, and organisation, publication of the biography was delayed until more propitious times. Essay? In fact, any attempts to interest Stuart monarchs in their Saxon forebears had only a limited success.
The Stuarts’ preferred cultural reference points were from the classical world rather than the history of their own islands. And Policy? The common Saxon heritage of the descriptive essay, Hanoverians and the Anglo-Saxons provided more fertile ground for the promotion of a cult of King Alfred. His first aristocratic and royal backers came from the circle which gathered around Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51), the eldest son of George II, and was united by the opposition of its members to the prime minister Robert Walpole. Walpole’s opponents called themselves ‘the Patriots’, and Alfred was the first ‘Patriot King’, who had saved his country from tyranny, as it was devoutly hoped Frederick himself would do when he succeeded his father. And Policy? A number of literary works centred upon Alfred were dedicated to the peaceful the prince. Sir Richard Blackmore’s Alfred: an Epick Poem in organisation and policy, Twelve Books (1723) enlivened the conventional accounts of Alfred’s reign with an extensive description of his imaginary travels in Europe and Africa, in which were concealed many heavy-handed compliments to Prince Frederick. Of much more lasting worth was Thomas Arne’s masque Alfred , which was first performed in descriptive, 1740 at the prince’s country seat of Cliveden.
The main text was provided by two authors already active in business, Frederick’s cause, James Thomson and David Mallett, but included an ode by Viscount Bolingbroke, one of the leaders of the opposition to shirley jackson Walpole who had defined their political philosophy in his essay ‘The Idea of a Patriot King’ (1738). A visual representation of this political manifesto was provided in business organisation and policy, Lord Cobham’s pleasure grounds at Stowe. Alfred’s bust was included alongside those of other Whig heroes in shirley essay, ‘The Temple of British Worthies’ completed in 1734-35 by William Kent. Alfred is described as ‘the mildest, justest, most beneficient of kings’ who ‘crush’d corruption, guarded liberty, and was the founder of the English constitution’, in pointed reference to qualities which George II was felt to lack. Alfred’s bust was placed next to that of the Black Prince, a Prince of organisation, Wales whose noble qualities were perceived as having been inherited by Frederick, particularly if he followed the be, example of King Alfred rather than that of his father.
The Stowe landscape gardens also contain a Gothic Temple, in which ‘Gothic’ should be understood as ancient Germanic. The building was dedicated ‘to the Liberty of our Ancestors’, and was surrounded by statues of business organisation, Germanic deities (albeit in Classical pose), while the ceiling of the dome was decorated with the arms of the earls of Mercia from whom Lord Cobham claimed descent. This new interest in the Germanic past began to trickle down to essay other sectors of society. Those who could not afford to erect their own monuments to business organisation Alfred’s greatness might nevertheless find remembrances of him in the Wessex landscape. In 1738, the antiquarian Francis Wise, hoping to shirley jackson essay improve his promotion prospects at the University of Oxford, produced a pamphlet ‘concerning some antiquities in Berkshire’ in which he argued that the White Horse of Uffington had been cut to organisation and policy commemorate Alfred’s victory over warrior essay, the Vikings at the battle of Ashdown, and that all other visible antiquities nearby had some connection with the campaign. His claims were entirely spurious, but helped to publicise the idea that Alfred’s influence permeated the very fabric of the and policy, country. Those who could not have a Saxon memorial in make work cited page, their grounds or in the nearby countryside could at least own a print of the new genre of History painting.
Alfredian topics, especially ‘Alfred in the neatherd’s cottage’ (the cake-burning episode), were among those frequently reproduced. Alfred at Stowe was also remembered as one ‘who drove out the Danes, secur’d the seas’, and his role as defender of the country and supposed founder of the British navy ensured him increasing fame as the country found itself embroiled in frequent foreign wars as the reign of organisation, Frederick’s son, George III, progressed. A series of patriotic Alfred plays, opera and ballets were performed, particularly during the French Wars (1793-1815). More often than not they ended with the rousing anthem which had closed Arne’s Alfred, ‘Rule Britannia’, which became increasingly popular as an shirley jackson essay expression of loyalty to organisation and policy the crown under the threat of foreign attack. It was from this period that ‘Alfred’ became favoured as a Christian name at all levels of society. As in be, other European countries, a new national pride in nineteenth-century England had an important historical dimension, and an accompanying cult of the heroes who had made later success possible. The English, it was believed, could trace language and constitutional continuity back to the fifth century when they had defeated the effete Romans, and it became increasingly felt that other, positive, facets of business organisation, ‘the national character’ could be traced back this far as well. Make Work Essay? These characteristics were felt to have made those of Anglo-Saxon descent uniquely programmed for success, and to rule other less fortunately endowed peoples, and and policy, the best of them were represented by King Alfred himself. Alfred was fast being rediscovered as ‘the most perfect character in history’, and alongside his defence of constitutional liberties, his country and true religion, was added renewed admiration for his Christian morality and shirley jackson essay, sense of duty. Anglo-Saxonism, and the accompanying Alfredism, could be found on both sides of the business and policy, Atlantic. Thomas Jefferson had ingeniously argued that, as the Anglo-Saxons who had settled in Britain had ruled themselves independently from be their Continental homelands, so the English settlers of America should also be allowed their independence.
He believed both countries shared an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and proposed a local government for Virginia based on a division into hundreds, an business and policy Anglo-Saxon institution widely believed then to essay test have been instituted by Alfred. A less attractive side of business organisation, this fascination with Anglo-Saxon roots was that it helped foster a belief in racial superiority, as celebrated in a shortlived periodical called The Anglo-Saxon (1849-50), which aimed to demonstrate how ‘the whole earth may be called the be, Fatherland of the Anglo-Saxon. He is a native of every clime – a messenger of heaven to every corner of this Planet.’ One of the chief supporters of The Anglo-Saxon , who wrote large segments of it if no other copy was available, was Martin Tupper, the author of several volumes of popular, highly sentimental and moralistic verses. Alfred was one of Tupper’s particular heroes, largely because he felt many of the King’s writings anticipated his own, and it was through his impetus that the millenary of Alfred’s birth at Wantage was celebrated in 1849, one of the earliest of all such jubilees. The event was not the success for organisation and policy which Tupper had hoped, largely because he left arrangements rather late in the day and had no influential backers.
Many of the details were still not fixed on the eve of the event to the indignation of the few local gentry inveigled into attending, but the event still managed to warrior attract crowds estimated at 8,000-10,000 who enjoyed traditional games and an ox-roast, as well as Tupper’s specially composed Jubilee song: Anglo-Saxons! – in love are we met. To honour a name we can never forget! Father, and business, Founder, and King of a race. That reigns and rejoices in every place, Root of a tree that o’ershadows the earth. First of a Family blest from his birth. Blest in this stem of their strength and their state.
Alfred the Wise, and the Good, and the Great! During the reign of Victoria, who gave birth to the first Prince Alfred since the Anglo-Saxon period (b.1844), King Alfred was accepted as founder of the nation and its essential institutions to such an extent that one commentator was moved to consequences of disrupting biological rhythms complain ‘it is surely a mistake to make Alfred, as some folks seem to organisation do, into a kind of consequences biological rhythms, ninth-century incarnation of a combined School Board and business organisation and policy, County Council’. Alfred was no longer a mirror for princes, but an exemplar for people at descriptive essay desert all levels of society and, above all, for children. Charles Dickens’s A Child’s History of England (1851-53) can stand for business and policy many such works where Alfred was used to demonstrate the best of the English character: The noble king . in jackson, his single person, possessed all the Saxon virtues. Whom misfortune could not subdue, whom prosperity could not spoil, whose perseverance, nothing could shake. Who was hopeful in defeat, and generous in success. Who loved justice, freedom, truth and and policy, knowledge. So much had Alfred become the construction essay test, epitome of the ideal Victorian that Walter Besant, in a lecture on Alfred in 1897, thought it entirely appropriate to apply to him verse that Alfred, Lord Tennyson had written to business organisation and policy commemorate Prince Albert. Alfred was no longer the totem of one political party. Work Cited Page? In 1877 Robert Loyd-Lindsay, Conservative MP for Berkshire and a perfect exemplar of the paternal landlord of Disraeli’s ‘Young England’ movement, provided Wantage with the statue that Tupper had hoped to raise in organisation and policy, 1849, but for which he had failed to get funds. Wantage also got the grand occasion it had missed then as Edward, Prince of Wales, to whom Lindsay had once been an equerry, unveiled the cited, statue carved by Count Gleichen, one of the Prince’s German cousins.
In 1901, the year of Queen Victoria’s death, there were even greater celebrations to commemorate the business and policy, millenary of essay, that of Alfred. Problems with the calculation of Anglo-Saxon dates meant it was widely believed then that Alfred had died in 901, rather than 899, which is now recognised as the true date of business organisation and policy, his death, but at the time it seemed particularly apposite to many that the great Queen and her illustrious forebear had died a thousand years apart. Warrior? On the surface the Alfred millenary appeared to and policy fulfil its aim, as advertised in the National Committee’s prospectus, of being ‘a National Commemoration of the work cited page, king to whom this Empire owes so much’. The procession through the heart of Winchester to the site of Hamo Thornycroft’s giant statue of the business and policy, King, included representatives of Learned Societies and Universities ‘from all lands where the English speaking-race predominate’ (needless to say, they were all white males) and members of the different armed forces. Alfred was further commemorated in the same year by the launching of a new Dreadnought, the HMS King Alfred . But in 1901 Britain was embroiled in the Boer War, and the priority was the reality of the present rather than an imagined past. The National Committee did not raise nearly as much money as it had expected and had to abandon many of essay, its ambitious plans, including one for a Museum of and policy, Early English History. Many were worried at the direction Britain’s imperial policy was taking. Charles Stubbs, Dean of Ely, took advantage of the millenary year to suggest that Alfred’s standards were not only in advance of his own age, but in advance of those of many statesman of the present day, especially in their conduct of the descriptive, Boer War, which had been prompted by ‘insolence of pride . by passion of vengeance . by lust of gold’. But there was also a more positive side to the celebrations when Alfred was used, as he had been in the past, as a cloak for the introduction of change in business and policy, society.
It was not by chance that the statue was unveiled by the Liberal leader Lord Rosebery, for the former Whig support for British Worthies had never completely died away, and Liberals were prominent in the many commemorations of the latter part of the nineteenth century. Warrior? It was a row over the statue of business organisation, Oliver Cromwell, commissioned in 1895 by Rosebery from jackson Thornycroft for the House of Commons, that precipitated the former’s resignation as Prime Minister. Business? The most active members of the descriptive, National Committee were leading Liberals and others, like the positivist Frederic Harrison and litterateur Walter Besant, who were associated with them in the promotion of Working Mens’ Colleges or the London County Council, formed in 1888 with Lord Rosebery as its first Chairman. Most active of all in the promotion of Alfred was the secretary of the National Committee and mayor of Winchester, Alfred Bowker, who used the millenary as an organisation and policy opportunity to develop the profile and scope of the Corporation of work cited essay, Winchester by, for instance, purchasing the site of Alfred’s final resting-place at Hyde Abbey with adjoining land that could be used for public recreation (as it still is today). And Policy? Lord Rosebery commented that the statue he was to unveil in Winchester. can only descriptive essay desert be an effigy of the imagination, and so the Alfred we reverence may well be an business organisation and policy idealised figure . Shirley? we have draped round his form . all the highest attributes of and policy, manhood and kingship. Alfred, though no doubt gratified by his posthumous fame, would have trouble recognising himself in some of consequences rhythms essay, his later manifestations, and would find it difficult to business and policy comprehend, let alone approve, some of the the peaceful warrior essay, constitutional developments he was supposed to have championed. One hopes that it will not be possible for business organisation such a wide divorce between an idealised Alfred and the reality of Anglo-Saxon rule to jackson essay occur again, but it is possible that Alfred’s symbolic career is business organisation not over. Now that Britain is relapsing into make work cited page its regional components, who better than Alfred, the champion of the English language and Anglo-Saxon hegemony, to be a figurehead of the and policy, new England? Corporate Sustainability Strategies: A Siemens Case Study. An independent SIS Market Intelligence Report by Michael Stanat, Research Executive, SIS International Research. Siemens is one of the world’s most prominent companies and business organisation and policy, Europe’s largest technology conglomerate. Consequences Of Disrupting Essay. With 430,000 employees, $77 billion in revenue and industrial manufacturing, the company naturally has a major impact on greenhouse gases emissions emitting 4.53 million tons CO2e. Siemens has acknowledged the importance of climate change as one of the most important challenges facing humanity, alongside world poverty and access of all people to proper sanitation and energy. This perspective has helped the company’s manufactured products eliminate 15 times the company’s total emissions. Organisation. Investing ˆ2 billion annually in construction essay, research and and policy, development, Siemens has a hefty 30,000 environmental technology patents and page essay, offers efficient solutions that better combat climate change. The company’s goal is to become a leader in climate change reduction by improving the business organisation, performance of customers through efficient products. In fact, it has proclaimed to media that it has the the peaceful warrior, most environmentally-friendly industrial technologies portfolio. Further, Siemens has publicly embraced the need to address climate change and energy efficiency into its operations, communications, cross functional boards, product development and its membership at non-governmental organizations.
Beyond this, Siemens has set tangible targets for the future: its leadership expects by 2011 a 20% increase in energy efficiency and a 20% reduction of global carbon dioxide emissions. Given the company’s size, global research and business organisation and policy, industrial technology solutions, the company has a strong platform to impact climate change. Central Question of Inquiry. This inquiry seeks to answer a central question: How has Siemens implemented plans to manufacture green products and make its operations green? Indeed Siemens has a vertical organization comprised of many strategic business units with vastly different operations. This question delves into of disrupting biological rhythms essay how a very diverse conglomerate like Siemens has integrated climate change among its units. Exploring this question further can help to business organisation, provide recommendations and warrior, understand existing challenges. Analysis on Siemens’ embracing climate change. Siemens’ overall stance and message on climate change is that climate change fits into a larger discourse on serious challenges facing humanity and the socially responsible corporation. Business Organisation And Policy. Essentially, Siemens views its role as providing the technologies to better resolve those issues while creating shareholder value. Essay. Its management acknowledges the seriousness of business organisation, climate change to human life, without neglecting the biological essay, complexity of issues.
Another consideration is advancing a sustainability campaign mirroring that of its competitors, which have largely incorporated climate change into their sustainability goals. Business And Policy. For example, Phillips (EcoVision) was one of the first competitors to launch major global PR efforts to demonstrate its green credentials to publics and customers. General Electric (GE) launched its salient “Ecomagination” campaign in 2005. ABB had a slogan “Power and essay desert, productivity for a better world”. Addressing these issues after many of its competitors, Siemens joined these efforts with its own campaign and advanced a definition of environmental best practices in industrial engineering along with the Boston Consulting Group. They arrived at business the definition ““Environmentally intelligent products and be, solutions” that apply to business, “significantly superior environmental standards in comparison to the installed-base average”. This definition favored Siemens’ products, by showing Siemens as having the largest volume of green products. With Siemens’ definition, Siemens claims ˆ19 billion versus GE’s ˆ13 billion and Phillips’ ˆ6 billion. Construction Test. In addition, Siemens can claim that the share of business and policy, green products among its manufacturing composes 25% compared to descriptive essay desert, GE’s meager 14% and and policy, Phillip’s 23%.
Exploring Siemens’ Green Initiatives. Siemens, as a global conglomerate, has hundreds of global projects part of a large “eco portfolio”. This paper will only be, illuminate several most recent international projects, with the purpose of showing how different business units are combating climate change in diverse ways. Indeed, Siemens is a global German company in industrial manufacturing requiring complex cross-border transactions with global clients. Thus, analyzing its operations in the United States is within the international scope of this analysis. Organisation And Policy. Generally, the company focuses on renewable power generation, efficient traditional power generation, efficient energy transmission systems, efficient heating and lighting, efficient transportation, and energy / greenhouse gas monitoring systems. Siemens Power Generation (SPG) is focused three key solutions. Consequences Of Disrupting Biological Rhythms Essay. First, it embraces Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in coal power generation longterm.
The approach is based on increased efficiency in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Plants (IGCC) pre-combustion carbon capture. Organisation. Siemens’ management expects that this will be ready for wide scale commercial use by make cited essay, 2014. Secondly, Siemens is focused on Post-Combustion Carbon Capture by optimizing current solvents and processes, and incorporating the unit into organisation the energy facility. For Siemens, the overall post-combustion capture system involves another stage to consequences rhythms, remove CO2 and is particularly used in retrofitted older power plants. Also, Siemens is a member of the CASTOR project under the and policy, European Commission, which is committed to lowering the cost of Post-Combustion Carbon Capture to 20-30 ˆ /t CO2. Thirdly, the company is focused on CO2 Compressors efficiency, particularly “gear type” compressors. Analytically, Siemens’ approach accepts that coal has enormous cost advantages that economically outweigh dramatic changes, but still seeks to rhythms, responsibly capture and and policy, store carbon to fight climate change. Moreover, Siemens has developed and commercialized technology to provide efficient energy transmission. One of work cited, Siemens’ advanced transmission initiatives is High Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission links targeting the grid efficiency. For example, Siemens Energy won a 2008 contract to build a 3000-megawatt HVDC system between China’s Guizhou province to Guangdong.
The project, in conjunction with Chinese partners, consisted of developing a system that could transport energy by 800 kV transmission voltage. The benefits were reductions in business, Greenhouse Gases by descriptive, more easily connecting remote power plants. This boosted the business organisation, amount of energy into the grid and construction essay, simultaneously made energy transmission more efficient. Another similar Siemens HVDC project in business and policy, China connected a hydroelectric dam from Yunan province to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. In China, the alternative would be coal power. Of Disrupting Biological Rhythms. Likewise, the benefits of efficiently connecting a renewable energy source to and policy, more remote areas without building polluting coal power plants were significant.
Furthermore, wind renewable energy is essay a major part of Siemens’ eco-portfolio. Siemens Energy builds wind turbines, claiming to business, have globally 1,800 megawatts of make work, offshore wind capacity installed or on order as of late 2008. One major project off of Denmark’s seacoast was its 2008 Rodsand II wind farm contract with E.ON to manufacture 90 wind turbines. To be completed in 2010, the turbines will provide 207 megawatts. Another major project in Sweden is Siemens contract to build Wind turbines for a vast wind farm by the Vattenfall company. The project will generate 170 megawatts. Beyond turbine manufacturing, Siemens also ensures turbine efficiency through vast research and modeling worldwide. To these ends, Siemens operates wind turbine RD centers in Denmark, Germany, the business and policy, Netherlands and cited page essay, United Kingdom.
In Colorado recently, Siemens opened a US wind turbine research center in business and policy, collaboration with the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). The facility, focused on researching and developing better turbines, will distribute wind technology research to Siemens’ other centers worldwide. Additionally, Siemens Energy is working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to provide laboratory atmospheric modeling. Descriptive Essay. This can help boost wind farm efficiency, which is organisation and policy plagued in some cases by 20% differentials from actual performance and initial forecasts. The Peaceful Warrior. Analytically, this commitment is business and policy consistent with Siemens’ approach to providing effective products while furthering technology that fights climate change. Siemens has commercialized landfill renewable energy to convert methane greenhouse gas from rotting trash into energy for industrial purposes. Siemens views this renewable energy as both profitable and shirley jackson essay, environmentally valuable. For example, the Three Rivers landfill in South Carolina partnered with Siemens building technologies to business organisation and policy, treat the gas for usage as fuel. Siemens then worked with Kimberly Clark, which treats the construction essay, gas and business organisation and policy, consumes it for essay desert its own purposes. This process reduces fossil fuels by harnessing existing waste. As the process took place over organisation, a distance of several dozen miles, it also boosted transmission efficiency with Siemens advanced energy transmission technology.
At the same time, it provided economic benefits to the purchaser Kimberly Clarke, who can purchase the energy from construction test Siemens at business and policy a much lower cost than from be traditional electricity. Business Organisation. The reduction from this Siemens project has removed the greenhouse gas impact of work cited page essay, 41,000 cars from the road, according to business, the EPA. Energy-saving retrofitted improvements by Siemens Building Technologies are another major part of construction, Siemens eco-portfolio. An example of this was the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina, one of the largest coliseums on the US East Coast. Siemens was contracted to retrofit energy-saving lighting systems, water saving systems and large modifications to organisation and policy, the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The renovation cut energy consumption by 25%. Descriptive Essay Desert. Water and natural gas usage fell 50%.
The coliseum saw lower maintenance costs, energy savings and increased comfort to business and policy, tenants. This Siemens project will have the effect of essay, eliminating 530 cars’ carbon footprint. Efficient transportation is another facet of the eco-portfolio. Siemens’ hybrid drive sy. stems, sold to bus manufacturers globally, are comprised of an ELFA system which optimizes energy usage. Organisation And Policy. The effect on these buses was comfortable performance using 40% less energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions. As they often run in urban areas, the biological rhythms, buses can also boost urban air quality and reduce the impact of smog. As a result of the systems, the Clinton Climate Initiative inducted Siemens Energy and Automation Inc because of the business, wide scale implementation of over 1,000 hybrid-drive systems in cities worldwide.
Another part of Siemens’ plan to make work page, combat climate change is membership in non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Siemens’ recent contribution included working on and policy, the World Economic Forum’s working paper. Siemens is also a member of the top companies of the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Climate Leadership Index. Essay Desert. Another key membership is The U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP). Notably, Siemens worked with two-dozen corporations at USCAP in developing a legislative consensus part of a “Blueprint for Legislative Action”. This membership suggests that Siemens supports climate change legislation to 80% emissions reduction cuts in 2050 back to business organisation and policy, 2005 levels, and a cap and trade emissions scheme.
GE, a direct competitor, is also a member showing that competitors view climate change seriously and conveying their own green credentials to publics. Additionally, Siemens has built a sustainability board of be, executives to convey messages to publics and manage sustainability efforts throughout the organization. Business Organisation. It appointed a Chief Sustainability officer Barbara Kux to implement sustainable measures throughout diverse businesses. While the Sustainability board’s role is to coordinate sustainability efforts, little information is available about the board’s efforts. Siemens has acknowledged the make work page essay, impact of the Global Recession on its businesses performance. And Policy. Siemens’ stock from rhythms April 2008-09 lost approximately half its value but remains stable as of late April 2009 around $65 per share. Yet the company predicts its “environmental portfolio” will account for nearly ˆ25 billion of global revenues by 2011, based on 10% annual anticipated growth. Business. Analytically this target shows management’s high expectations for Siemens’ green solutions. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, Siemens products’ impact by construction test, 2011 is projected to slash emissions by 275 million tons, equaling the business organisation, total emissions generated by six of the world’s largest cities. If this happens, Siemens will gain another green credential to reduce some criticism levied against the company.
Fang Zhou extensively studied Siemens’ sustainability commitment. In a 2004 study focused on Siemens Australia, Fang found several challenging findings. Fang found that only 40% of business units participated in Siemens’ top improvement program, involving environmental and social sustainability. The reason was that employees considered it too general, unclear and wasteful of their time. Lacking were incentives, awareness, and performance benchmarks outside of strict emphases on financial performance. Put bluntly, Fang proclaimed, “The results indicated a significant gap between what is important for Siemens and how well Siemens is essay desert performing in terms of environmental and social sustainability.” Essentially, Siemens needs to business and policy, better harness and optimize its human resources to achieve its goals.
Experts have taken issue of Siemens’ definition of descriptive essay desert, being green, particularly because it was favorable to and policy, Siemens in showing publics a stronger commitment to combating climate change. Make Cited Page Essay. Specialist Gunter Schoech at organisation GL Group raised his concern. Siemens offers combined gas and steam turbine. His point was how could it be considered green when this turbine system will still annually emit 2 million tons of carbon dioxide. His analysis was that it could be considered green only in be, the sense that it offers efficiency gains over the past generations. Siemens would have to claim explicitly that it is 2% more efficient than the business and policy, last generation of turbines. Additionally, Schoech analyzed that Siemens’ sustainability board may face a dismal inefficacy that preceded many of Siemens’ cross-functional company wide boards. The source of their failure has been an inability for cross-functional implementation across units, which certainly vary across Siemens’ diverse specialties. He hypothesized that in the past there were not sufficient incentives and jackson, motivation to work together among units for sustainable solutions, similar to Fang’s aforementioned findings.
Other challenges exist for Siemens, particularly in comparison with its competitors. Business. Siemens message of its stronger commitment to climate change may have less salience than GE’s robust marketing campaign “Ecomagination”. Make Cited Essay. To this day, Siemens’ initiative does not have a salient slogan or messaging program to convey to publics a commitment to climate change unlike GE and ABB. Instead, publics see climate change on the Siemens Youtube channel, a point of contact with consumers and businesses, as only one of many other issues that Siemens is addressing. Siemens faced humiliating bribery scandals over the past decade, which threaten relations with governments and publics. First, the organisation, company participated in the Oil-for-Food program and was alleged to cited, have paid surcharges to Saddam Hussein’s government. Secondly, Siemens was in the spotlight for business organisation ˆ1.3 billion in corruption scandals in the past few years.
Thirdly, the company was forced to pay a fine of $300 million to a court in Germany due to corruption abroad.
