I'm delighted to report that our good friend from Montreal, Hugh Wilson , was responsible for about skills, compiling these summaries and forwarding to me for formatting and posting. The Race Series has been in place for many years, but seems to fly a bit under the radar for many members, especially the newer ones. Congrats to overall 1K winners Ryley Higgs and Finn Campeau . The 5 km event was won by the speedy Declan Colwell in pbis research 16:02. The first female across the line was Corinne Schonewille in a time of 20:34. Declan's win in the 5K spoiled Corey Turnbull 's streak of 3 in a row. However, Corey had the satisfaction of being the about skills overall 3 race series winner in an average time over the 3 races of 18:28. The female series winner was Marieke Van Spriel with an average time of 22:18. Congratulations to Corey and Marieke. Each of their names will be added to the special Mark Darroch memorial plaque. We join the running community in Canada and indeed across the world in mourning the passing of Ed Whitlock, the legendary holder of multiple master's distance world records. Essays Reading Skills! Ed died of prostate cancer on research paper March 13 at the age of 86. About Reading! Ed ran his last marathon at the ScotiaBank in papers building Toronto last October and completed it in under 4 hours. Ed's achievements are without equal and include a marathon in 2:54 at essays about reading 73 in a performance the New York Times ranked as the best marathon finish of all-time. But what really set Ed apart was the grace and humility he showed in term papers spite of all his great achievements. He also had a wry sense of humour. His training consisted of running for hours around the cemetery near his Milton home. Race proceeds go to shirley, help support the local food bank. PLEASE NOTE: Freeze Your Buns and Food Item Donations. As you may know, over the years runners in our winter Freeze Your Buns series have been invited to essays about reading, bring along a non-perishable food item to race registration. Pbis! The food items, along with the net cash proceeds from the races, were donated to essays skills, the local Brockville Food Bank, currently on Buell Street. Pbis Research! A non-perishable food item, generally a canned good, entitled the essays about donor to a $2 discount on race entry fees. The club executive has had feedback from the Food Bank that a significant number of such food items they've received in antebellum essay questions recent times have been unsuitable, as they've been beyond the expiry or best before use date. These items had to be discarded on receipt by the Food Bank.

This is about not a desirable situation and, as a result, the Food Bank has requested that we no longer collect food items at our races . However, on the positive side, with the end of the skills $2 discount, the cash proceeds to the Food Bank will be increased. Food bank operations in general now advise that they actually have a preference for donations of money compared to food items. So thanks to series' directors Rick Oliver, Roger Hawksby and Janet Wynands and their volunteer crews for all the work and effort they put into this initiative over the years. It was very worthwhile and welcomed by the Food Bank.

Jingle Bell Chase 5K; Saturday November 26. The sixth annual chase was held in relatively good conditions on Saturday Nov 26. Race director Rick Swift made a modification to reading skills, the course, cutting out the trip around Laurier Hill, through the trails, etc in favour of how can i write completing the basic FYB's road circuit. The winner and first across the term finish line was Yvonne Linseman-Malanka . There was a disappointing turnout of just 25 runners, with many of our regular members noticeably absent from the chase itself but not necessarily from a Saturday morning run. Rick Swift is to be commended for yet again organizing this fun event on behalf of the club. This in spite of being extremely busy in preparing for a pending house move. Essays Skills! Thanks Rick. New Board Update: Two New Potential Members. Since the AGM on November 22, two club members, Brenda Young and Megan Primeau, have expressed an interest in joining the board. The board of seven elected at the AGM will have the option at research their first meeting of co-opting these two women to the board. Features a staggered start based on each runner's individual 5K time, the acres time that it usually takes them to finish a 5K race.

This makes it a handicap race based on ability and about reading, not on age as in the past, so all have an equal chance of winning. Annual General Meeting (AGM); Tuesday November 22. The main points coming out of the meeting were: Chris Emslie Amanda Brown Zack Boyd Krista Haasnoot Bernie Cormier Murray Tait Ian Loughrey. In a break with general practice, but not for the first time in our history, the decision was made, with the approval of the general membership present, to elect the seven nominees above to the board. At their first meeting, the new board will elect/appoint the various officers, including president, and other positions as required.

I'm glad to report that since their unhappy experience at shirley jackson essay the Toronto Marathon, Brenda Young and Ilona Thomas each made a successful comeback, finishing in style at the Sunday, November 6 Hamilton Marathon . Another of our senior runners, Mary Clayton, took first place in the 70+ age category in a time of 2:18:58.4. Merv Wears Gold. While some of us were scaling the hills of New Hampshire in the annual 203 mile Reach the Beach Relay, others were participating in various events as part of the Army Run in about reading Ottawa.

Events consisted of a 5K and a Half Marathon (21.1K). For hardier souls there was the papers on team opportunity to about, run both distances in what was called the Commander's Challenge. A number of our area runners completed this feat, with pride of place going to Shelley Steenwyk whose total time for the 2 runs of 2:14:30 garnered her a 3rd place in the 50-54 age category. Congrats Shelley. Good also to see Ian Loughrey continue to show good form in running a 1:34:07 for the 21.1K, good for 5th in pbis his 55-59 age category.

The Hodgsons, Merv (2nd) and Anne (4th), were also well placed in their 5K age divisions. Congrats to all. I have searched (or indeed scoured) the Sportstats website as best I can and have summarized the results across the reading skills 3 competitions for club and area runners. Apologies if I've missed any. (Combined 5K and Half Marathon) TIP Sat Sept 10: Report and Results. Well the TIP 21.1K and 5K are now history. Chris Emslie and friends succeeded in organizing and managing this large undertaking. Understandably based on the relative inexperience of the group, there were a few glitches but nothing major.

Chris was lucky to have Randy Frith once again take care of the Community Hall and more importantly make the measurements and place the many pylons involved with marking the long stretch of course involved. Many thanks Randy. The finish line services of Bryan Lambert and pbis, his Running By Design company were also vitally important. Reading Skills! A special acknowledgement of the Doyle family, out to watch Dad Bryan complete his first half marathon, who were commandeered to man a couple of water stations. The turnout particularly in the featured half marathon was disappointing. Just 36 runners lined up for this the 29th edition of shirley jackson essay this historic club event. Race Series: Current Points Totals. Has been pointed out to me that I used the 2015 and not the 2016 results in error for FYB#2 in the tables. Will correct and add the TIP results in the next draft. Note that since at least 3 runs must be participated in to be listed in the final series tables, only those who have competed in 2 or more races to this point are included in these interim summaries. BRRC President Chris Emslie and crew are busy finalizing preparations for shirley essay, this the 29th Annual Mark Darroch Half Marathon and James K Carlyle 5K on the Thousand Islands Parkway (TIP). Race start for the 21.1K half is on team building 8am with the 5K heading out at 9:20 am. Both course distances have been certified. The Montreal Lads and Ed Whitlock. While browsing the website of the Raisin River Footrace in Williamstown, scheduled for about reading, Sunday August 7, I came across this very nice photo from a previous year: The lads are BRRC club members who regularly travel to Brockville from Montreal to i write a essay, run our races. Thanks Rick Swift- Our Canada Day Run Impresario Extraordinaire. We certainly owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rick Swift for his tremendous contribution to the success of the Canada Day 5K. Rick began by helping and learning the ropes from club founder member and past president Rick Oliver. Paper! Then in 2003 Rick took over essays about, the reins himself and research plan dissertation, set out on a path of development and growth that took the level of participation from less than 100 to consistently over the 200 mark (250 this year). Along the way, Rick fixed the name and date of the run to reading skills, coincide with Canada Day on July 1. In recent years Rick, with the essays reading help of the Wynands family, secured the sponsorship of local area Dairy Farmer organizations. Rick steered us calmly and competently through a number of challenges over the years: runners had to antebellum essay questions, skirt around vendor pop-ups on reading Water Street, compete with the deafening noise from the power boat regatta, relocate because of the Artisan Village and then last year deal with the construction of the new skateboard facility just off of the Brock Trail. In sum, Rick has been a powerhouse of a race director for the Canada Day Run. Of course, he also jumped in at the start of the 5K almost every year and term papers on team, tossed off one of those hugely impressive, senior's sub-20 minute or just over 20 minute runs. Advice for Students on Topics for the New Common App Essays. It was posted in its entirety on Everything2.com and in an abbreviated form on Amazon.com due to term, space constraints. I'm reprinting it here with a few changes and reading, connections. Beware a few spoilers. Building! There we go. ERAGON : Fantasy novel by Christopher Paolini; book 1 in the Inheritance Cycle . A short (and somewhat sarcastic) summary: Main character = Eragon, mysteeeeerious boy-child left with his aunt and uncle by wandering mother, father unknown. Boy finds mysteeeeerious stone. Turns out to be dragon egg.

Boy raises dragon and bonds with it strongly. Bad guys come and reading, destroy boy's house and kill his uncle. Boy swears revenge. Boy's secret dragon is discovered by a thousand essay, mysteeeerious storyteller who turns out to be master swordsman and random magic user. The hunt for about the bad guys begins, and boy searches for his destiny as a legendary Dragon Rider (of course, that must be capitalized). Eragon goes through traditional bouts of training and learning about i write a essay in english himself under the stern tutelage of skills old wise traveling companion. Jackson Essay! Along the way he gains and loses friends, and skills, he rescues a mysteeeerious woman from a horrible dungeon while never straying from his quest to how can i write in english, put right all that is wrong in a world oppressively ruled by an evil king. This book got lots of attention when it first came out, partly because the author was so young. Essays Skills! He was fifteen when he started the book, and in english, was nineteen when it was published. Essays! Age isn't always correlated with mastery, of antebellum course, but when I read this book, I could TELL that the writer was either young or an immature writer.

Though it seems people think it got published somehow because of its great merit, this book was actually self-published by the author's parents (company was Paolini International), and then it was paraded around on a self-funded signing tour the way most self-published people do. An established author happened to run into the family doing a signing while he was on essays skills vacation, thought a kid writing a book was interesting, bought a copy and made his stepson read it, and decided to how can i write in english, try to skills, get the book a deal when the kid liked it. (Don't believe me? Watch Carl Hiaasen explaining how it happened.) The people at Knopf re-edited and repackaged and re-released it under that label. Shirley! There are dragons and elves, sword fights and unexpected revelations, and of course, a beautiful maiden who's more than capable of taking care of research plan dissertation herself. I would argue that this book is not an essays about reading, archetypal hero story so much as an research, overused and overly traditional Tolkienien epic, with epic in quotes because it lacks exactly that epic nature that made the world of Lord of the Rings so rich. There was absolutely nothing new or unexpected in essays, this book (though the author claims there are revelations), and if readers find this book exciting, they are probably reacting to how can i write in english, the concepts themselves (e.g., fantasy worlds, dragons, fierce battles) rather than the book's own merit, or perhaps they have never been exposed to the dozens of fantasy and science fiction epics from about skills which this author pulled his influences. My feeling was that this book was nothing special because, if I may be so blunt, it's been done, and it's been done better. Looks like Mikey wasn't impressed! Though I have to give the single prop that by standards of TECHNICAL editing it was a smooth novel (I, a professional editor, did not notice a single typographical error), I must say that content-wise it was an editorial mess. The fact that this novel gives the finger to the writing craft about a billion times raises my suspicions that it was not held to the usual industry standards. Here are a multitude of how can examples, unavoidably coated in spoiler dust. My complaints regarding the writing style itself:

Every imaginable permutation of the essays reading skills word said is used. Acres Essay! If the reader cannot tell how characters are saying something based on what they are saying, it is likely that the dialogue has been written sloppily. 'You're not thinking,' admonished Brom. Yes, that is an admonishment without you telling us so. Leave it out. 'Get on essays skills with the story,' he said impatiently. Essay! Well, if one person is urging another to get on essays about reading skills with it, it stands to research, reason that it's being said impatiently. Essays Reading! I am not usually a reader of antebellum essay traditional fantasy, and traditional fantasy does tend to be more flowery than other genres, but either way random descriptions should not just be thrown into skills, the mix. Research Plan! Eragon is waking up and stretching. Suddenly we get a description of the reading items on his night table, including the random information that he likes to look at papers on team building one of the objects on it frequently.

In the reading skills meantime, while we are getting this rush of information, Eragon is acres putting on his shoes. He then does not proceed to touch, pick up, or look at anything on the night table, and none of it is ever mentioned again. Also, people and places just get sudden paragraphs of description. Essays! We're fighting an Urgal and research, all of a sudden . Essays About Reading! . . drop some description on us. While he's rushing at Eragon with drooling fangs, no less. By all means, describe the fangs, slipping the adjectives in gracefully. But don't give us a run-down of a typical Urgal when we're a lot more interested in whether those fangs are going into Eragon's head. (I wish.) And lastly, too many words, phrases, and building, concepts seem to be entirely lifted from reading skills other well-known works. Word choice read as if it the author was attempting to use all his SAT words; it was verbose and flowery as if on purpose, trying to impress with vocabulary that would have been better used sparingly. The similarity of some people's and places' names to those of Tolkien have not gone unnoticed by seasoned fantasy readers; I have heard several people call this book Aragorn without even noticing they weren't saying it right, not to mention things like Ardwen (compared with Arwen), Isenstar (compared with Isengard), and Isidar (compared with Isildur)--and there are a LOT more. A ridiculous number of phrases seem to be something I've heard before, though I'm not sure where; for example, near the beginning someone is touching a wrapped package repeatedly, as if to reassure herself that it was still there.

I mentioned this to a friend and said, That's FROM something. He replied, It's FROM everything! Far too often, ridiculously overused or clichd similes and metaphors are used, such as tears being described as liquid diamonds. It is less like this book was written and more like it was sewn together from the torn apart products of others, like some old quilt on which the jackson essay stitches are showing. (How's that for essays about reading an original simile?) And now, criticism regarding the content: Two words: Unpronounceable names. Why is the land called Alagasia? I think there is on team little actual consistency in the languages, though Paolini tries to explain that away by saying the land was settled by different people with different languages. (Seems to me an excuse for lack of consistency, considering on REAL maps the about countries' names change depending on acres essay what country they were published in. Is the United States Estados Unidos on your English map?

Didn't think so.) Actually, the randomness of the accents and umlauts really came off as an attempt to about, make the how can in english language look cool and foreign. There is plenty of other delightful language fun, besides the essays random umlauts: Take for instance magic words with no damn vowels, or words that possess random apostrophes as if they are contractions, though no letters have been left out. How Can I Write! Why are they called the Ra'zac? What is being left out between Ra and zac? The apostrophe isn't indicating any necessary pause; it just doesn't make any sense. And how does one pronounce Draumr kpa anyway?? Yes, you have succeeded in making it all exotic. I guess that was the point? And yes, I know that these words were based upon real ancient and modern languages that some readers would NOT consider unpronounceable, but here's the problem. Are the humans speaking English?

Probably not; they've probably got some other language, but Paolini seems to about reading skills, have set English as the mysteriously unnamed common language. Research Paper! Which implies that everything we're reading has been reconfigured for essays about reading skills our understanding anyway . With the sheer lack of consistency in these made-up languages, what is the purpose of acres deliberately choosing spellings that don't make sense to essays about, English-speaking audiences? There's no excuse for the overall inconsistency; Tolkien's languages were hard to essay, figure out, but he was a linguist, and there WAS rhyme and reason. You have to make all kinds of new language rules up to make Alagasia actually be pronounced the way he says it is, and it just would have been easier to spell it in a more intuitive way. (In other words, we are supposed to believe that he, like Tolkien, created entire other languages for these books, but since these languages are unlikely to hold up to how can a essay in english, intense scrutiny by any linguist--if any linguist could be made to care--there is the excuse that Eragon doesn't really speak it right.) And speaking of Tolkien. . . . Okay. Attractive, complex map on inside cover. About! Flowery language, often to the point of ridiculousness (such as when he would return, he knew not).

Elves are fair, beautiful, long-lived people with another language. Plan Dissertation! Dwarves are short, stocky, bearded people who live under mountains. Essays About Reading! Dragons breathe fire. Creatures called Urgals are regarded as monsters and speak a guttural language, though there are the pbis paper elite forms of these which have multiple times the strength and endurance. All swords seem to have names. Hmm, except for essays about reading the fact that the name Urgal is how can i write used and people can actually ride the dragons, I think this might just be Middle-Earth. I kept expecting to see a hobbit. We must go on a quest to find the antidote in a race against research paper, time, though at no point during the frenzied journey are we actually worried that the essays about skills lady is going to die. THAT wouldn't happen; love-interest girls are only allowed to have sexy and alluring bad things happen to them, like an attractive scar on the cheek or a tragic past where Daddy didn't love her. Term Building! They don't die of a slow-acting poison, making the about reading skills hero's trip completely forfeit.

Don't forget the proverbial choosing of research plan sides, where upon essays reading his arrival the hero must decide where to cast his alliance, though of course there are spies and baddies among the essay good guys. As if that wasn't enough, the story contains many details that might have been included in the interest of fleshing out the world of Alagasia, but they were rather pointless meanderings rather than descriptions that mattered later and added to the richness of the novel. I got the idea that the author just wanted to tell us some neat detail he'd worked out, one of those things that authors are supposed to KNOW but not tell the a thousand essay audience unless it MATTERS, and in order to squeeze it in he just randomly has the essays about skills main character have these questions occur to him so someone else can go off on plan a tangent explaining the finer points of, say, the communication system they use in this half-deserted mountain. Sometimes it just seems he hasn't quite figured out skills what inventive little blurbs should nevertheless be left out. Sticking these in is yet another hallmark of an amateur. Paolini would do better to avoid chattering about term papers on team building it what he's invented, and reading skills, maybe instead do some research on pseudo-medieval settings so he doesn't make mistakes like having poor villagers living in what would have been rich people's conditions back then.

Eragon had his own room in their humble house for crying out plan loud. Research much? I bet it had glass in the windows! Then there is the about reading matter of the overused characters. First, the random fountain-of-wisdom old man who obviously has a curious connection to the main character. (Can you say Luke, I am your father? Okay, so he's written as though he's more like a grandfather, but the role he ends up filling is close enough -- the shirley same thing -- wait, now we're changing the reading story and he actually IS --never mind, spoilers bad. Besides, he's a lot more like Obi-Wan.) He hides information from i write a essay Eragon because oh that would be dangerous for you to know now or I will keep that to myself.

Translation: Plot-wise, Eragon needs to be ignorant of that in essays skills, order to make all the how can a essay in english supposed revelations of the story more powerful, so we'll just make him a stubborn old man who talks all too freely once the dramatic revelations have passed. Completely manipulating a character to essays about reading skills, have all-too-convenient whims about what information he drops . . . How Can I Write In English! this is essays about just bad form. Term On Team Building! (Of course, he later justifies it by saying that some of essays about skills those secrets are not his to tell, but still, awfully convenient, don't you think? And what about the secrets he ended up telling ANYWAY once Eragon discovered part of the truth himself?) She wouldn't have believed me! says Glinda. Translation: If it had been that simple, we couldn't have had a movie! Paolini seems quite proud of shirley himself for about reading skills having a beautiful maiden who's more than capable of taking care of herself, but first off, does he have any idea how INSULTING that is? Research! He's the GUY! But if a WOMAN can take care of herself in a story, well, now that's something different, isn't it? He seems to have no idea that he betrays a sexist attitude toward women if he suggests that this one being able to defend herself is somehow unusual. And beyond that . . . she isn't particularly independent, considering her role in essays reading skills, the story begins when she has to term papers, be rescued by our bumbling dragon-riding hero. Arya pretty much has no personality--like everyone else in the story, actually--and exists as a plot device. Essays Reading! At least it's kind of fun to watch her respond to Eragon as though she is research dissertation offended by his attention. Essays About Skills! Everything he does is because he is insane. There is an explanation for paper his insanity, but it's pretty weak, and it was brought on by some very unwise choices he made in the past which also seem to have no motivation. Foreshadowing? Yes.
